St. Melangell Custom High Cross

Updated: Dec 22, 2023

St. Melangell is an Irish Saint and the patron saint of rabbits and hares. I was inspired toward the high cross pattern while looking at pictures from my son's recent pilgrimage to the British Isles. One cross in particular, St. Ciaran's, was in inspiration fron this cross. The hare was added in honor of St. Melangell. This cross was commissioned for beautiful little newborn Melangell, who will be baptized in the next month or so.

This the original cross in Ireland.

I'm working on a design for a St. Ciaran's high cross to add to the line. I worked from a copy of that drawing to add the hare.

This cross was made using hand fabrication methods, as opposed to lost wax casting. It was fabricated from one piece of 14 gauge argentium sterling silver.

The design details were hand engraved onto the surface.

This picture was taken through my workbench microscope.

One advantage of this technique is that a very high degree of detail is possible. This cross is only 35mm x14mm.

St. Melangell pray for us!
